The available degrees and diplomas for further study in Hebrew and Jewish studies are described below and linked to the relevant sections of the on-line handbook. Graduate Diploma in Arts (Hebrew)This course is for people who have an undergraduate degree with an average of at least an H2B (70-74%) and wish to undertake studies in Hebrew. The course begins with an introduction to Modern Hebrew for beginners and intermediate Hebrew for more advanced students. The course is structured to accommodate the applicants' interests, permitting them to enter at a level appropriate to their prior linguistic experience. Graduate Diploma in Arts (Jewish Studies)This course encourages students to explore aspects of the Jewish experience in a range of disciplines including history, literature, archaeology, philosophy. ethnography and social theory. Applicants can also acquire a greater knowledge of contemporary spoken Hebrew for the purposes of practical use and understanding of the language. Further details are available from Arts Research. Postgraduate Diploma in Arts (Jewish Studies)The course provides many opportunities for further work in Jewish studies, and will be of particular value to those wishing to acquaint themselves with some of the many developments in the field in recent years. Applicants require an undergraduate degree with a grade average of at least an H2B (70-74%) in the final year of the course. Further details are available from Arts Research. Master of Arts (Jewish Studies)The MA in Jewish Studies is available by research only. Students complete a 30,000 word thesis to be written on an approved topic under the supervision of a member of staff. Candidature is normally 12 to 18 months full-time or 2 to 3 years part-time. Applicants for a Master of Arts (Jewish Studies) are normally expected to have completed a BA Honours degree, or equivalent, in Jewish Studies or a closely related discipline with a final result of at least H2A (75-79%). Where students are not qualified for direct entry in this manner, an MA Preliminary program is available as a preparatory course leading to the MA. It is intended for students who are not suited to undertake a postgraduate diploma and need to have an individual course of study designed for the,. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)The PhD in jewish Studies is a research only degree. A thesis of 80,000 to 100,000 words (in English) is written on an approved topic under the supervision of a member of staff. Candidature is normally 3 years full-time or 6 years part-time. Applicants are normally expected to have completed an MA (Hons) degree in Jewish Studies or equivalent with an H1 (80-100%) or H2A (75-79%) result. Students who have completed none months or more of research for a Masters degree by thesis only and who are qualified for admission to the PhD program, may apply to be admitted to confirmed PhD candidature.
